Kenneth D. Powell Endowment for the Creative Word
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Psalm 119.105
The kick-off fundraising event was a cabaret and silent auction held in October 2009. The fund is managed by the church Memorial and Endowment committee and the speakers chosen by a group including the Pastor, a member of Sacred Arts and a member of the Powell family or its designee. The first speaker will be featured May 23, 2010.
Designated gifts can be mailed to the church to the attention of Powell Endowment or made on the church web site (under special designation, list Powell Endowment).
Pilgrim Church’s minister for over 25 years, Ken Powell was a gifted preacher and storyteller, and the spoken word was important to him in all its forms. To honor Ken’s memory, a permanently endowed fund is being created that will underwrite the cost of bringing in a guest speaker each spring.
Participants can be preachers, speakers, authors, storytellers, poets, actors, or any person who uses the spoken word to inspire our spiritual, moral or ethical growth. Some of the participants will be of interest to children as well as adults.
The endowment will pay a fee and expenses for the person to speak at a worship service and to provide a class or workshop during the weekend which will be open to the congregation and the community as well as visitors from other congregations such as Bethel. Beginning with $7,000 which has already been donated in Ken’s name, the endowment will be enhanced with contributions and an annual fundraising event until the initial goal of $100,000 is reached. Then only the interest from the fund will be spent.
