Kenneth Powell Fund
“Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path”
Ken Powell, a beloved minister who served Pilgrim Church for over 25 years, was a gifted preacher and storyteller, and the spoken word was important to him in all its forms. To honor Ken’s memory, a permanently endowed fund was created to underwrite the cost of bringing a guest speaker to Pilgrim Church each spring. Those invited might include preachers, speakers, authors, storytellers, poets, actors, or any person who uses the spoken word to inspire our spiritual, moral and/or ethical growth. They will appeal to the interests of children as well as adults and will speak at a worship service and to provide a class or workshop all of which will be open to the community and neighboring congregations.
The endowment will be enhanced with contributions and an annual fundraising event until the goal of $100,000 is reached. When this goal has been met, only the interest from the fund will be spent on future presenters. The fund is managed by the church Memorial and Endowment committee and the speakers are chosen by a group which includes the Pastor, a member of the Sacred Arts ministry and a member of the Powell family or its designee.
The kick-off fundraising event was a cabaret and silent auction held in October 2009 and our first speaker to join us in the spring of 2010 was Gregory Maguire, the author of Wicked.
