The Sacred Arts Ministry

“Praise Him with tambourine and dance: praise Him with strings and pipe.” - Psalm 150:4

Worship music

We believe that the arts are essential in enriching worship, encouraging creative interaction among members and connecting the church to the community. The Sacred Arts committee plans programs with the pastor, Music Director, staff, other committees and members of the congregation.

Weekly music includes:

  • organ preludes and postludes
  • anthems by the Chancel Choir
  • hymns sung by the congregation (we use the Pilgrim Hymnal and a number of other sources).

Other ensembles which provide music for services:

  • Senior and Junior Handbell Choir
  • Cherub and Children’s Choir
  • Pilgrim Band
  • Pilgrim Brass
  • Pilgrim Philharmonic
  • Jr. High and High School student musicians

Pilgrim Church organThe organ was built in 1864 by E & G.G. Hook Organ Co. of Boston and was renovated with some additions in 1991 by the Andover Organ Co. The instrument has two manuals and pedal and just under 1000 pipes for 17 stops.

The piano is a 7 ft. Falcone grand built in 1988.

The Chancel Choir rehearses on Thursdays at 7:30 pm and sings at Sunday/special services, September to June. Music includes classical to contemporary anthems, spirituals and hymn arrangements. Once a year, the choir sings a larger work with orchestra.

The Senior and Junior Handbell Choirs rehearse on Thursdays at 7:30pm and Mondays at 5:00pm and play for services several times a year. They play a 5-octave set of Schulmerich handbells and a 5-octave set of handchimes.

The Cherub and Children’s Choir rehearsals are part of Sunday Church School. The choirs sing for Sunday/special services several times a year.

Jr. High and High School student musicians also perform for the Family Christmas Eve Service and the Youth Service.

Instrumental ensembles play occasionally for services and concerts. They include Pilgrim Band (a small jazz Combo), Pilgrim Brass, and the Pilgrim Philharmonic.

Other Arts in Worship

Stained glass panels made by Church School childrenSacred Arts is always looking for ways to include artistic expression in making services more meaningful to the congregation, often partnering with other church committees.

Recent projects include:

  • Stained glass window panels made by church school classes
  • A new altar cloth for Lent to add more color in the sanctuary
  • “Elements”, a participatory art project for our 175th anniversary
  • Restoration of the murals on the balcony wall
